Yes, same happens with Taxi in Greece too sometimes. They just need to make stronger laws to protect passengers rights from these scams etc.

In Bagdat, People may seem 'fake', but to me its normal because that is like all of Athens these "fake" people laugh.gif

Its a shame because such small things like this are putting negative experience for visitors. In some people, they let it dominate their opinion of their trip, and this is very bad for Turkish tourism. Generally, consumer protection is what is needed.

Many times also in bar, they put a price outside and then its different inside.

QUOTE (drakos13 @ Sep 14 2009, 07:22 AM)
would like to go back for the match, but unfortunatley I cannot.

I had a very good time in Istanbul, its an amazing city, one of the best in the world really. Food was very good, I looked up some restaurants first, and had some very nice street foods.

Haydar made a good recomendation, I went to Sultanahmet festival in Ramazan, was fantastic.  I walked in Fener and Balat. Briefly I was in Ortakoy, and then my last day I went to Bagdat Caddesi in Kadikoy, just to look. I was suprised, its the most modern looking caddesi in Turkey (that i have seen).  Very nice to go on the Bogaz too with the boat, and very cheap.

The only thing I only dislike being a tourist in this city, it's not so nice to be a tourist there, makes things unpleasant. It really is the only bad part of going to Turkey, So many great things around you, but so many people trying to fool you into give you more money etc, everywhere must become an arguement.  Next time I will go only if I know people to visit. Some people were very nice and genuine too, I must say.

One taksi charged me 42 YTL from Sultanahmet to Taksim. Unbeleivable, but it was on the meter so I assumed maybe prices were different in Turkey, I am an honest person. Then I give him 50, with his other hand he holds a 5 YTL tries to tell me I gave him 5! I was stupid to even give him 50 the first time... dry.gif

This is very unfriendly for tourists.  I think that Turkish Tourism Ministry should adress these issues, and require registrations for taxis to allow Tourists to at least report these behaviours more easily. Its such a great place to enjoy, protecting the people from these morons will make them enjoy their experience enough to keep returning.

But if everybody is trying to screw them, they will think bad of Turks, and not want to come back to Istanbul or even to Turkey. I think some reforms there would be quite beneficial to Istanbul retaining more tourism.

Hey Drakos, i am glad to hear you had a good trip in Istanbul. It seems that you have been to great places, hope next time you visit my favorite place Nevizade smile.gif

well i think taxi drivers problems are a bit global. Haydar has given you good tips, next time try to talk them in Turkish, that can work too..
by the way also be careful because 5 and 50 TL are very similar, my mother always confuses of them.

when i was in Athens, i had a different problem about taxis. once in a busy hour, i tried to stop one but none of them stopped, me and my friends tried for nearly half an hour because we were really tired.. so maybe this is the second biggest problem of Athens..
meanwhile, i found a taxi after midnight when the driver found out i am Turkish, he wanted me to sing the song of Sertab and didn't ask me double money biggrin.gif that was quite funny!!
